Geographical Boundaries of Europe

Europe’s boundaries are defined by several natural landmarks. The Ural Mountains, Ural River, and Caspian Sea in the east, and the Greater Caucasus range and the Black Sea in the south, mark the limits between Europe and Asia. Countries like Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkey span both continents. The Mediterranean Sea separates Europe from Africa, with islands like Malta and Sicily on the African Plate. Iceland, straddling the Eurasian and North American Plates, is also part of Europe.

Sovereign States in Europe

Europe is home to 50 generally recognized sovereign states, including Kosovo with limited recognition, and five largely unrecognized de facto states. These countries vary in size, culture, and political structure, contributing to Europe’s rich tapestry. The European Union, a significant political and economic union, includes 27 of these countries, further integrating them through shared policies and governance.
